Minnesota Woman Sentenced To Prison For $325,000 SNAP Fraud Scheme

LaTasha Thomas, 39, was sentenced to 12 months in prison followed by a year of supervised release for mail fraud and must also repay $325,159 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to US Attorney Daniel N. Rosen, Thomas, her daughter Ambrosia Thomas, and relative Cynthia Thomas conspired to cheat the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). They obtained EBT cards unlawfully by impersonating Minnesota temporary drivers’ permit holders and making false statements about high-risk pregnancies.

According to court documents, the Thomases submitted false applications to Hennepin County, which directed EBT cards to Cynthia Thomas’ Roseville apartment. Law enforcement discovered proof of the plan at this location.

The group utilized EBT cards to withdraw money from ATMs, make purchases, and sell card usage to others for a charge, resulting in over $325,000 in losses.

The investigation was undertaken by the FBI and the Hennepin County Fraud Unit, with Special Assistant US Attorney Jeanne Semivan prosecuting the case.
