2 Women Arrested on Over 30 Warrants for Multi-County Retail Thefts in Ohio, Kentucky

Two women, Danielle Custard and Latoya Carter, have been taken into custody on over 30 active warrants after being linked to a spate of retail thefts dating back to 2019 across four counties, as reported by FOX19. U.S. Marshals joined forces with the Fairfield Township Police Department and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office to apprehend the suspects, who were wanted in Butler, Warren, and Hamilton counties in Ohio, as well as Boone County, Kentucky.

According to information shared by WHIO, the US Marshals Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) played a critical role in the arrest, which marked the end of a long-term investigation into thefts from stores including Carter’s, Old Navy, and Kohl’s Custard. She alone accounted for a swathe of thefts totaling thousands of dollars, while Carter had eight active warrants.

Investigators have been chasing the pair since their alleged stealing operations began, noting their ability to evade detection by living at non-public addresses, according to a WLWT interview with Fairfield Township police Sgt. Brandon McCroskey. McCroskey outlines a “large-scale scheme” in which the suspects resold stolen products, with store managers and loss prevention well aware of their identities and how they led police on a car pursuit, which authorities did not pursue due to the crimes’ nonviolent nature.

During the capture, Custard was found hiding under a mattress box spring, a tactic that momentarily obscured her from the law’s gaze, whereas Carter had been previously detained since Jan. 13 in Butler County Jail. Now both are charged with a raft of theft-related actions. They had attempted to fade into the sinew of the ordinary, pinching the fruits of retail labor only to have their run end in the iron grasps of justice. Custard’s attorney has since attempted to lower her bond.

As the legal proceedings against the two continue, their arrests provide closure to the affected stores and highlight law enforcement’s vigilant efforts across state lines. Custard and Carter’s upcoming court dates will define the next chapter in this multi-year retail stealing drama.
