A former driving school owner in Brockton was sentenced for bribing a road test examiner into issuing licenses to applicants who did not take the test.
According to the Boston Department of Justice, Carlos Cardoso, 72, paid a cash bribe of more than $20,000 to a road test examiner at the Brockton RMV service center in order to falsely claim to the RMV that certain driver’s license applicants had completed their road test when they had not. Some applicants did not even show up for the test. As a result of the fraud, the RMV sent driver’s licenses to unqualified applicants.

Cardoso entered a guilty plea to one count of honest services mail fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit honest services mail fraud. On Friday, he was sentenced to time served (one day in prison) and two years of supervised release, with the first six months spent at home. He was also had to pay a $5,500 fine.
