Police are searching for the gunman who shot over three dozen rounds into an SUV in Central Oak Cliff on Tuesday, killing the female driver and injuring her passenger.
At 7:45 p.m., Dallas police responded to a shooting in the 2200 block of South Zang Boulevard, near the Wynnewood Village shopping area. Investigators have determined that two individuals sustained gunshot wounds while driving. Their bullet-riddled Cadillac SUV collided with another vehicle after the gunfire, according to a police statement.
The driver, Kayli Lopez, 24, and a male passenger, 21, were taken to a local hospital. Lopez died immediately after arriving, but the man is expected to live.
Detectives informed FOX 4 that a suspect in a separate car shot more than 36 rounds into the SUV before leaving. The description of the suspect’s vehicle has not been given, and the inquiry is ongoing.
The incident occurred across from the Wynnewood Village shopping center, where police are likely to check for surveillance camera evidence.
The male passenger’s identify and relationship to Lopez have not been published. Police have yet to identify a suspect or motive for the crime.
Lopez’s family is looking for answers. They had no idea who the 21-year-old passenger in the vehicle was.
“When you open that door, you heard that loud laugh, and I’m never getting it back,” Omar Lopez, the victim’s brother, told FOX 4’s Peyton Yager. “I’m supposed to defend them, and now I’m here. I can do nothing anymore, and she’s gone.”
Her husband told FOX 4’s Peyton Yager that Lopez stated that she was going out to grab dinner before the shooting occurred. As the hours passed, her family became concerned.
The 24-year-old leaves behind four children, including a seven-month-old infant, and a family that wonders who would perpetrate such a murder and why.
“She was a mother. She was a good student. She got married. She owned her own home and owned her business,” Omar Lopez continued. “I can’t even go into her house. It’s hard, you know…”
