Two Chicago men are facing felony charges after allegedly stealing catalytic converters from a north suburban business, which was later linked to a larger stash of car parts discovered in the city.
Riverwoods police said officers were dispatched to a catalytic converter in the 700 block of Saunders Road at 3:28 p.m. on Jan. 23 after three scrapped catalytic converters were stolen. Two suspects reportedly fled the scene in a car.
Police later identified the vehicle and the two people inside.
On February 10, at 11:59 a.m., cops discovered and stopped the car near Deerfield Road and the I-94 overpass. Christopher T. Miller, 21, and Michael Ely, 48, were later arrested, according to police.
Both men were charged with one count of theft, a Class 3 felony.
On February 14, at 10:15 a.m., Riverwoods police carried out a search warrant at a storage facility in Chicago.
An investigator from the Lyons Police Department, who is investigating a similar crime in Lyons, assisted in the search.
Police said they recovered over 130 catalytic converters, as well as precious metals and other car parts.
The Riverwoods Police Department stated that the inquiry is underway.
