An unlicensed driver from Mexico was detained for driving without a license after being caught at a Pilot gas station in Wildwood with a suspended tag on his vehicle.
A deputy saw a silver Nissan passenger car parked at a Pilot gas station at 493 E SR 44, Wildwood, around 10:25 p.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. A check of the license plate revealed that it was suspended outside of Tennessee. He observed the motorist, 48-year-old Domingo Lopez Lopez, who has an address in Tennessee, leaving the parking lot before performing a traffic check on State Road 44 and Interstate 75.
Another deputy came on the scene and took over the traffic stop. He attempted to connect with Lopez Lopez, who did not understand English, and a Spanish-speaking deputy responded. According to the report, he informed them that he did not have a license and could only provide them with his Mexican identification.
Lopez Lopez did not have a Florida driver’s license or a license in any other state, according to the report.
Lopez Lopez was later arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. The Mexican native was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center and then freed after paying a $150 bond.
