Detectives from the Chico Police Department apprehended a wanted fugitive who had been on the run for almost a year.
According to authorities, 48-year-old Jack Duane Crist of Oregon has been on the United States Marshals’ Most Wanted list since May 2024.
According to Chico Police, Crist failed to attend a sentencing hearing in Lane County, Oregon, after pleading guilty to first-degree rape and attempted first-degree rape.
On Tuesday, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals called Chico Police to advise that they received information indicating Crist could be in Chico and asked for Chico Police’s aid in establishing Crist’s likely whereabouts.
Detectives from Chico Police carried out a surveillance operation at a property located in the 1500 block of E. Lassen Avenue, believed to be Crist’s residence. Within a few hours, detectives noticed a man leaving the house.
Because of his distinct physical attributes, detectives were able to positively identify the individual as Crist and apprehend him without incident.
Crist was arrested for his outstanding federal criminal warrant and brought into Butte County Jail. US Marshals are jailing Crist for extradition to Oregon, according to Chico Police.
Authorities suspect Crist has been hiding in several places, including Arizona and Missouri, and may have used names such as “Jack Watson” and “Zane Carson.”
According to the Chico Police Department, anyone who may have had contact with Crist or been victimized by him while he was a wanted fugitive should contact the Lane County Sheriff’s Office at (541) 642-4150, Option 1.
Chico Police thanked the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals for their cooperation and professionalism in resolving the case.
