$1.6M in stolen goods and cash recovered in a retail theft investigation

Two Denton County residents are facing organized crime charges following an investigation in which state and local police say they recovered $1 million in stolen property and seized $636,000 in cash.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Investigations Division, Neeraj Singh Kanyal, 36, and Ankita Kanyal, 31, both of Oak Point, were detained and charged with felony participation in organized crime and felony theft of property. Ankita Kanyal is also facing charges of interfering with public duties.

Ankita and Neeraj Kanyal are being held at the Denton County Jail on $20,000 bonds. Ankita will be required to post an additional $500 bond for the interfering charge. It is unknown whether either has retained an attorney to speak on their behalf.

State police did not comment on what prompted the investigation or provide a list of the items recovered. DPS authorities stated that the investigation was underway and that no new information was available.

DPS authorities confirmed that a collaboration between retailers and various police departments resulted in the arrests and recovery of about $1 million in stolen products and $636,000 in cash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety claimed they collaborated with retailers and many local police and sheriff’s agencies on the investigation, including Allen, Irving, Oak Point, and Plano officers, as well as the Denton County Sheriff’s Office.
