A 21-year-old inmate was discovered unresponsive early Thursday morning within the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
According to LMDC officials, police found the Hispanic male inmate about 4:24 a.m. while serving breakfast inside the institution. The inmate had been in custody since February 14.
Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the jail, but the individual was pronounced dead on the scene. His identity has been suppressed pending notification of his relatives.
The LMDC Professional Standards Unit initiated an internal investigation. The Louisville Metro Police Department’s Public Integrity Unit has also been contacted and will conduct a review, as is customary procedure in situations of death in custody.
In a statement, LMDC Chief Jerry Collins offered his condolences to the inmate’s family.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young man,” according to Collins. “We are fully investigating the incident to determine the facts of this unfortunate event.”
As the inquiry is ongoing, no other information has been given.
