The mother of three, severely attacked by dogs in Mississippi earlier this month, died in the hospital on Friday morning, according to the police department and coroner’s office.
On March 3, dogs attacked Lakesha Newsom while she was strolling along Highway 178 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Because of the severity of her injuries, she needed to have an arm and a leg amputated while in the hospital.
Newsom had spent three weeks fighting for her life at Regional One Health in Memphis. Her mother claims that they were attempting to make her comfortable.
Sandra Harris, 54, the dogs’ owner, has been charged with aggravated assault, which demonstrates great disregard for human life.
Rosie Young says the news of her daughter’s death shook the entire family.
“We’re still trying to find the words to process the loss,” she told me.
Newsom’s family claims the pets are still alive and have not been euthanized.
“To have these dogs still alive, how fair is that?” Newsom’s mother, Rosie Young, remarked. “Why are they keeping these pets from being euthanized?” “We lost Kesha.”
Newsom’s family said the last time they saw her, she was in excellent spirits, talking and laughing with them. But after learning of her death, they want to know what happens next, according to city and county officials.
Lakesha’s mother, who has been by her daughter’s bedside since it happened, says it brings her peace knowing her daughter is no longer in anguish, but there are doubts that persist while she grieves and stays strong for her grandkids.
“It’s my first time seeing myself. “I’m in a lot of pain,” she explained.
According to Newsom, at one point, they stopped attacking him, possibly thinking I was dead. I was trying to escape when they saw me and attacked again.
That attack kept the 35-year-old at Regional One for weeks. Her arms and legs were amputated.
“They took chunks and chunks of meat, buttock; they took chunks out of my daughter to where you could see the bone,” Young told the reporter. “God is still good and in control; that is all we have. We had to give that news, and they are still reacting negatively.
Trying to hold back tears, the family expresses their dissatisfaction with the police chief and other leaders for not taking the necessary steps to provide the family with closure.
According to the Holly Springs Police Department, they have contacted the District Attorney’s office to see whether the charges would be enhanced; we are waiting for a response.
According to the criminal affidavit, Harris is accused of purposefully, knowingly, and feloniously causing serious bodily injury to the victim, Newsom, by negligently allowing her dogs to run at large, resulting in the dogs mauling and injuring Newsom, and of violating the peace and dignity of the state of Mississippi.
