An Arizona copper thief was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay over $46,000 in restitution, police said Monday.
Robert Joseph Carrillo has already pleaded guilty to theft and trafficking in stolen items, according to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.
Carrillo faced charges for stealing and selling copper wiring from Tucson’s streetlight system in September and October 2025.
The Arizona copper thief damaged subsurface infrastructure, necessitating significant repairs, and created a safety concern by turning off lamps, according to authorities.
On March 24, Carrillo received his prison sentence and was forced to repay the city $46,582.
