The Florida Highway Patrol said that two men were killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a pickup truck while standing outside their vehicles on Interstate 95.
Troopers reported the incident happened just before 5 a.m. on I-95 northbound near Old St. Augustine Road, northwest of State Road 9B.
Authorities said a 56-year-old Palm Coast man and a 38-year-old Jacksonville man had stopped their cars in the inside lane and were standing on the inside shoulder. It’s unclear why the vehicles were halted.
According to investigators, a 63-year-old man from Wilton Manors was driving a pickup truck in the inside lane when he drove onto the shoulder and struck both men and their vehicles.
Both victims were pronounced dead on the scene. According to investigators, the pickup truck driver was uninjured and wearing a seat belt.
The incident shut down both northbound lanes of I-95 for many hours, diverting traffic to State Road 9B.
The incident is still under investigation.
