9 people arrested and $1.13M cash, 40 kgs of cocaine seized in Puerto Rico to Florida mail pipeline

In an operation dubbed”It’s a Trap,” law enforcement busted a notorious drug trafficking ring that inundated Central Florida with hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Puerto Rico, arresting nine people.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office announced a raid on Monday, stating that the investigation, which began in August 2025, was a large-scale operation involving several state and federal authorities working together to battle the criminal trade.

Investigators identified Michael Hernandez Maldonado as the kingpin, alleging that he and his friends orchestrated the importation of hundreds of kilograms of cocaine.

Officials said they used the US mail system to transport their narcotics around the region, posing a major threat to community safety.

The Sheriff’s Office stated that the investigation revealed how traffickers cleverly stored cocaine in hidden compartments in automobiles intended for local customers and dealers. As a result of the operation, various search warrants were executed, resulting in the seizure of illegal substances, cash, and weapons.

According to the report, the operation resulted in the confiscation of 40 kilograms of cocaine, more than $1.13 million in cash, and a huge cache of guns.

Throughout the investigation, authorities suspended the activities of nine people affiliated with the trafficking network; these suspects are now facing a slew of criminal allegations, including drug trafficking and money laundering.

Those arrested include:

  • Michael Hernandez Maldonado
  • Paola Sierra
  • Euezer Negron Aevarado
  • Antonio Martines
  • Marcos Hernandez Oouendo
  • Leslie Sierra
  • Louis Luna
  • Luis Adorno Rosa

Sheriff John W. Mina said, “It’s always a good day when we can take down a drug trafficking organization responsible for such a major influx of cocaine into Central Florida.”

In addition to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and Homeland Security Investigations all played important roles. Local law enforcement from St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Polk County contributed to the operation’s success.
