“I am heartbroken to learn that another life has been lost in an ICE detention facility,” Arizona Senator Theresa Hatathlie said. “The treatment of individuals in these facilities raises serious concerns about the humanity and accountability of ICE operations. Families and communities deserve answers.”

Vargas was arrested in Flagstaff on August 2 and charged with possession/use of drug paraphernalia. Enforcement and Removal Operations detained him and transported him to Phoenix for processing. He was then transferred to the Central Arizona Correctional Complex in Florence, according to the department.

“ICE remains committed to ensuring that all those in its custody reside in safe, secure, and humane environments,” a statement from the agency said. “Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout the entirety of their stay.”

Arizona Senators Hatathlie and Catherine Miranda are urging ICE to provide a thorough explanation for Vargas’ death.

“Law enforcement, including ICE, is meant to protect the community. That protection includes holding officers who are responsible for the mistreatment of individuals to be held accountable,” said Miranda. “Lorenzo’s family deserves answers regarding his death.”
