Mississippi Man Sentenced To 40 Years In Prison After High-speed Pursuit Ends In Shooting

Anjayvious Farmer, a Mississippi man, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of attempted murder. The sentence was handed down today in DeSoto County Circuit Court, bringing an end to a case that began with a violent highway shooting in September 2023.

Farmer, who pled guilty in June 2025, was sentenced to two concurrent 40-year terms. The allegations come from an incident in which Farmer followed his ex-girlfriend and her new partner from a gas station in Coldwater, Mississippi, along Interstate 55.

During the high-speed chase, Farmer fired multiple bullets at the couple’s car, injuring the driver and causing them to crash. Both victims survived the incident and have made successful recoveries.

Following the shooting, Farmer attempted to conceal his conduct. He fled the scene and subsequently used a stick and cinder block to push his car off a steep embankment and into a creek. The farmer subsequently fled the state but was finally apprehended in Wisconsin and sent back to Mississippi to face charges.

District Attorney Matthew Barton responded to the case, sending a forceful warning to future potential perpetrators. “You can run, but you cannot hide from accountability in DeSoto County,” Barton told reporters. “Let these words be a warning: if you commit acts of violence in DeSoto County, you will be caught, you will be prosecuted, and you will go to prison.”

Coldwater Police and the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department worked together to conduct the investigation. Assistant District Attorney Ben Weathers prosecuted the case.
