18-year-old Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison For Murdering Robbery Victim — While On Parole For Attempted Murder

A South Side man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after murdering another man during an armed robbery last year. Devon Holly, who turned 18 late last month, was already serving juvenile parole for attempted murder when he killed the man.

Holly built a substantial and serious criminal record before reaching maturity, according to officials. In 2021, he was 16 years old when he was found guilty of attempted murder in juvenile court and later released on parole. While on parole, authorities charged him with possession of a stolen automobile, but the allegations were dismissed on January 25, 2024.

Holly, who was still on parole for attempted murder, allegedly lured 18-year-old Davion Borders to an apartment building in the 700 block of East 60th Street on January 31, promising to sell him workout sneakers. Borders greeted Holly’s sister in the foyer, and they took the elevator to the fourth story. According to authorities, Holly appeared in a ski mask, snatched Borders’ phone, and demanded his password before stabbing him multiple times during the battle.

Borders was stabbed all over his body, but authorities said the fatal blow looked to be a knife wound to the heart. Police discovered a 6-inch serrated steak knife blade buried in his body.

Witnesses directed Chicago police officers to a 17th-floor apartment, where they saw blood on the door and in the corridor. Inside, they discovered Holly crouching under bedsheets with fresh slashes on his hands, blood on his shoes, and Borders’ phone in his possession, officials said.

Investigators also discovered a broken knife handle in the flat, as well as Borders’ rucksack and the shoes that had been for sale.

Judge Alfredo Maldonado presided over the case and condemned Holly to spend his entire prison sentence.
