First Snowfall Of The Season Might Hit Albany, Syracuse And Buffalo Ahead Of Thanksgiving

After a mild November, upstate New York could see its first measurable snowfall of the season as cooler air and lake-effect systems return closer to Thanksgiving week.

Temperatures in parts of New York will stay above normal until early November, according to a NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC) statement issued on October 24, 2025. However, between November 15 and 23, temperatures are forecast to drop and precipitation will increase, allowing for mild to moderate snowfall in Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo.

According to forecasters, lake-effect snow is most likely in western and central New York, with Buffalo and Syracuse having the highest chances of early accumulation. If temperatures drop swiftly near Thanksgiving, eastern and southern locations, including Albany and the Hudson Valley, might receive flurries or a brief wintry mix.

While no significant storm is forecast, NOAA advises that even light early snow may cause sloppy roads and reduced visibility for motorists heading into the holiday weekend.
