Woman Taken Into Custody After Hit-and-run Leaves Child Injured In Parking Lot

An 18-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday following a hit-and-run accident that injured a two-year-old child, according to court and police documents.

Around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the child was walking with his father in the parking lot of University Shoppes, a shopping center at 3919 Madison Ave., when the hit-and-run happened. A gray Ford Escape SUV collided with the child.

The child was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in stable condition, with significant road rash on his arms, legs, and head.

Lanyah Vaughn-Taylor fled the scene but later returned and surrendered to police. Her case was entered in Marion Superior Court 34 on Sunday, and a judge granted her release from custody. She will be charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily harm. Her first hearing was planned on December 1.

According to court documents, a witness followed the SUV and questioned Vaughn-Taylor at a stoplight, where he admitted punching the child.

Officer Richard Faulkner from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Officer Blake Benton from the University of Indianapolis Police Department came to the scene. They took statements from the victim’s father and a witness.

Vaughn-Taylor returned to the site, driven by a friend and not in the suspect vehicle, and decided to surrender because she saw the child she hit and had her own children.
