Nearly 100,000 checks worth over $22 million have been mailed to Pennsylvania residents.
The checks are part of the inaugural year of Pennsylvania’s Money Match program, which restores unclaimed cash to residents.
This year, hundreds of thousands of letters were sent to people who had dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks, rebates, insurance policies, and more.
The state might also refund the money from actual unclaimed property to the rightful owner.
According to State Treasurer Stacy Garrity, the Treasury has returned $50 million to the people who earned it.
The Treasury claims that it owes some of the $5 billion in unclaimed property under its care to more than one in ten Pennsylvanians.
