According to investigators, Shanetta Chantell Gilbert was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima eastbound in the left lane of Northwest 54th Street when the victim, who was riding a scooter westbound on the right shoulder, made a quick left turn to cross the road from north to south.

They stated the man “violated” Gilbert’s right-of-way, resulting in a collision.

According to police, the front of Gilbert’s car impacted the man, who came to a stop in the westbound lanes of Northwest 54th Street.

Miami Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene and transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was initially listed in critical condition due to an evisceration of the abdomen, a broken left leg, a broken ankle, and a traumatic brain injury, according to police.

Authorities announced on Tuesday that the guy died as a result of his injuries. His age and name had not been published as of Tuesday afternoon.

Despite initial claims of a hit-and-run, Gilbert remained on the scene and cooperated with officers, according to police.

Gilbert has never been awarded a legal driver’s license, according to investigators.

According to jail records, she is charged with one count of driving without a valid license after a crash.

As of Tuesday, Gilbert was not listed as an inmate on the Miami-Dade Corrections website.
