A 19-year-old was sentenced to 21 years in prison for stealing a designer bag in Granite City in 2025.
Jalon O. Mathis, 19, pled guilty Friday in Circuit Court to armed robbery. According to court documents, Mathis admitted to the armed robbery of a designer cross-body bag on June 23, 2025.
The robbery victim stated that Mathis had arranged for a third person to buy the bag at a Granite City business. Instead, Mathis and the third person snatched the victim’s backpack and fled.
Lauren Maricle, Assistant State’s Attorney and Chief of the Violent Crimes Unit, prosecuted the case.
The Granite City Police Department handled the investigation, with support from the Illinois State Police and the United States Marshals Service.
