Ohio Congressional candidate taken into custody during Grove City ‘No Kings’ Protest

Don Leonard, a Democratic candidate for Ohio’s 15th Congressional District, was detained on Saturday morning at a “No Kings” protest in Grove City.

The incident happened as Leonard, an Ohio State University professor and former Peace Corps member, was addressing a crowd of demonstrators. According to witnesses, Leonard was using a bullhorn when Grove City police officers approached and told him to stop.

He was arrested and was dragged away in handcuffs.

Leonard’s campaign confirmed the arrest to ABC 6 and assured supporters that the candidate was “safe.”

Leonard is currently running for the Democratic nomination in the May 5 primary to represent a district that includes Grove City, Hilliard, and southern Franklin County. He is up against fellow Democrat Adam Miller for the chance to challenge Republican incumbent Mike Carey in November.

Grove City officials have not yet detailed what charges Leonard could face, but local rules normally require permits for loud amplification in public places.

The “No Kings” movement has witnessed an increase in local action recently, with organizers citing concerns over federal government overreach.

This story is developing.
