Driver charged in fatal 105-mph collision on Detroit’s west side

A driver with a history of reckless driving has been charged in a deadly crash on Detroit’s West Side.

According to court records, Dwayne Proctor was driving 105 mph when he collided with another car at Grand River Avenue and Telegraph Road. He reportedly ran a red light and collided with a vehicle carrying two women.

Witnesses caught video of the horrifying scene following the incident as first responders battled to save the two victims trapped inside their car. A 68-year-old woman died, while a 44-year-old woman was badly injured.

A local business’s surveillance video captured the incident, which showed smoke bursting from both automobiles.

Dwayne Darrel Proctor drove the vehicle. He was arraigned in court this week, virtually from the hospital.

Proctor suffered severe spinal fractures and a ruptured lung. According to court papers, a four-year-old was in the car with him at the time of the incident but suffered no major injuries. Officers reported smelling alcohol on Proctor, and a toxicology report is still pending.

Proctor’s criminal history suggests that he has a habit of speeding. Most recently, in February, he was charged with reckless driving and pleaded guilty to drag racing. He was charged with driving while suspended in April and careless driving last month.

The judge denied him a personal bail, citing his prior record.

“He has a drinking or narcotics conviction, which resulted in an accident in 2018. Not only that, but the claims state that he was exceeding the speed limit. “This court believes Mr. Proctor to be a danger,” the judge stated.

Proctor is being jailed under a $500,000 cash bond. His next court appearance is set for June 25.
