Four people died when a car being pursued by an Alabama state trooper went off the road and into a tree, authorities said Sunday.
The incident occurred late Friday night while the driver was attempting to avoid the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s highway patrol on a remote road in southeast Alabama’s Pike County, according to ALEA spokesperson Amanda Wasden in an email.

CBS affiliate WTVY-TV said that they were driving a 2022 Hyundai Elantra. There were no other vehicles engaged.
Wasden said the collision was being investigated, and no other information was given. Her email did not explain what triggered the pursuit.
The driver and two passengers, one of whom was 17 years old, were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the sedan. The third passenger was not evacuated, but all four were declared dead on the scene.
Authorities identified the driver as 27-year-old Tykevious D. Russaw of Eufaula and the passengers as 27-year-old Robert D. Hall and 24-year-old Quamay Richardson of Clayton, according to CBS station WAKA-TV. The teen passenger was not named.
