Texas authorities are conducting an intensive investigation and manhunt following a tragic shooting in Kauffman County that left one 18-year-old and badly injured another, prompting statewide and federal law enforcement assistance as they seek at least one suspect in the case. The fatal event occurred late last week when sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of shooting near the intersection of County Roads 101 and 103. When cops arrived, they found two 18-year-old guys with multiple gunshot wounds. One victim, known as K. Letherwood, was pronounced dead after being transferred to a medical facility, while the other, identified as L. VeIez, survived his wounds and remains in serious condition.
Law officials immediately concluded that the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather the result of numerous assailants opening fire on their victims. According to investigators, the suspects fired more than 30 shots during the confrontation, and after the initial gunshot, one or more of them took the victims’ truck and ran over at least one of the wounded. The magnitude of the violence and the quantity of rounds fired alerted both local and regional law authorities, necessitating an immediate reaction.
The KCSO charged 18-year-old D. Rodrigues with capital murder in connection with the incident. Federal partners, including the Texas Rangers and the US Marshals Service, have joined the hunt, which is still ongoing as of early April. Officials have published the shooter’s physical description, noting that he is roughly 5’4″ tall and weighs about 130 pounds. He should be regarded as armed and dangerous. Texas authorities have also advised that he may be armed and that members of the public should not approach or detain him if they see him.
In addition to searching for the shooter, officials think at least one other suspect is still at large. Although the dead victim’s family members have publicly named the suspect as one of those involved, law enforcement has yet to identify any further suspects. The sheriff’s office is still gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses who were there at the time of the incident, and investigating tips from the public.
Officials have stated that one of the victims was able to call 911 after the initial shooting, providing critical information about their position and condition to first responders. Witnesses who spoke with authorities recounted hearing a significant number of bullets and then seeing the victims lying on the road, prompting urgent pleas for assistance. Investigators are examining physical evidence from the scene, such as shot casings and vehicle marks, to reconstruct the order of events and determine each suspect’s role.
The violence has had a profound impact on the killer’s family and community members, and family and friends have announced plans for memorials and ceremonies for the deceased victim. Residents in the neighborhood have expressed their grief and disbelief over the abrupt loss, highlighting the shooting’s impact on this rural part of North Texas. Meanwhile, authorities encourage anyone with information on the suspects or their whereabouts to contact law enforcement or local crime stoppers, as tips can be filed confidentially. The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement pursues leads and works to bring those responsible to justice.
