Five suspects are under arrest following a shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge that killed one person and injured several others, according to police.
Police said the shots were fired in the food court, and they described it as a targeted occurrence during a conflict between two groups rather than a random act of violence.
During a press conference Thursday night, Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse stated that officials are seeking additional suspects who may be involved. “In no way is this investigation over, and we do believe that there are more people involved,” he replied.
Morse stated that one firearm was retrieved from the location.
According to Baton Rouge police, five people were hurt in the incident and are being treated at surrounding hospitals. The nature of their injuries remains unknown. Police first reported that ten persons had been hurt before reducing the overall number of casualties to six.
Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards announced that all shoppers had been evacuated from the mall.
Police stated the site had been secured.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry confirmed the incident and is working with law enforcement. “Please pray for the victims and their families,” Edwards said in a statement.
During a press conference Thursday night, Mayor Sid Edwards stated, “Baton Rouge has a history of coming together in times of tragedy, which is tragic in and of itself.”
The Mall of Louisiana will be closed all day on Friday “out of respect for the victims.” “Our heartfelt thoughts go out to everyone affected by the horrific act of violence that occurred here today,” the statement stated.
