A Las Vegas man was charged in connection with a crash that left one man injured and several others.
On Saturday, Cleveland Police charged Zayd Alameen, 22, of Las Vegas, with aggravated vehicular assault and homicide.
Alameen was arraigned on Monday, and his bond was set at $50,000.
On Friday, around 5:20 p.m., officers arrived at the junction of West 150th Street and Lorain Avenue for a multiple-car incident.
Investigators discovered that a 2017 GMC Acadia was speeding westbound on Lorain Avenue.
Police confirmed that five cars were involved in the accident.
As the GMC approached the Warren and West 150th intersection, it changed lanes and collided with two other cars heading westbound.
According to police, the GMC drove off the road and hit a fire hydrant.
One of the cars hit by the GMC pushed into a fourth car before moving into the eastbound lane and colliding with another vehicle.
Five individuals were brought to the hospital:
- 22-year-old man (driver of GMC believed to have caused the accident)
- 23-year-old man
- 22-year-old woman
- 21-year-old man
- 54-year-old man
The 54-year-old guy later died of his injuries. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as James Michael Cook of Fairview.
According to Sgt. Diaz of Cleveland Police, Alameen was taken to the hospital, discharged, and immediately arrested.
“He was transported to the jail, charged with vehicular assault and vehicular homicide,” Diaz stated.
Investigators discovered that the GMC was taken from the 3700 block of West 130th Street just moments before the fatal incident.
According to authorities, Alameen allegedly stole the victim’s car after she left it running in a driveway.
“The suspect in this accident had moments before the incident just taken a vehicle from the area of West 130th,” Diaz stated. “So the suspect is also under suspicion for grand theft of a motor vehicle,” Diaz stated.
Diaz asserted that the accident was preventable.
“This individual should not have been driving that fast, should not have been in a suspected stolen vehicle, so this is something that could have been prevented if better decisions were made by this suspect,” Diaz stated.
The Cleveland Division of Police’s Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.
Alameen will return to court for his preliminary hearing on May 4 at 8:30 a.m.
