A Columbus mother is urging parents to keep track of their kids’ whereabouts and who they are with after a group of teenagers beat up her 12-year-old son.
Jasmine Johnson stated that her son, Demiyon, visits the library every day after school to read and play games.
When she took him up before 8 p.m. on April 14th, she realized something was wrong. “You could be in the wrong place at the wrong time in a library,” Johnson explained.
Security cameras at the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Linden Branch caught one teen approaching Demiyon and punching him in the face. Three adolescents wearing masks joined the assault and struck Demiyon until he slumped to the ground. “I was devastated,” Johnson explained. “I was angry. Mad is an understatement; he’s a terrific child.”
Johnson identifies her son as having autism. She claimed the suspects gave him a concussion. Demiyon’s mother reports that he is unaware of the culprits or the cause of the incident. “He had no idea it was coming because they were all around him,” she explained. “He still did not know. He’s thinking, Mommy, they want to be my friend. And, as we all know, that was not the case.”
Columbus police stated they are investigating, but no charges have been filed against the youngsters as of yet. The police report lists the suspects’ names as “unknown.” I believe they should be held accountable because if they are going around beating up kids for no reason, it will continue, right? Because there’s no responsibility,” Johnson explained.
Johnson believes their parents should also be held liable. “I just want things to be better,” she explained. “I want us to care for other people’s children as well as our own. If my child did this to another child, I would apologize to the parents and offer to do the boy’s laundry for the rest of the month. Ralph Carter, founder of We Are Linden, stated that it is now more important than ever for the village to return.
Carter speculated that the attack could have been motivated by boredom. They’re going to do something to grab a short laugh, but they have no idea that they’ve just put someone on a path of destruction that will eventually hurt them,” Carter added.
Demiyon’s mother expressed that the attack had ruined a positive chapter in his writing. This was a stepping stone for him to break out of his comfort zone and find something he enjoyed,” she explained. “He still comes here. He still comes here, even after his assault. The next day, my son arrived. And he doesn’t want to stop coming here; therefore, he shouldn’t have to, right?”
