Malcolm Antonio Lumpkin, 19, was driving more than 50 mph over the speed limit down Northwest 37th Avenue in Miami Gardens in 2020 when he collided head-on with a woman attempting to make a left turn, according to police.

Nearly five years later, Lumpkin, now 24, is charged with reckless vehicular homicide. He has faced accusations of incompetence leading to someone’s death before.

According to an arrest warrant from the Miami Gardens Police Department, the fatal accident occurred around 7:45 p.m. on October 7, 2020. Police issued the warrant in March.

According to the warrant, Renee Symonette, 49, was attempting to make a left turn on Northwest 179th Street when she collided with Lumpkin, who was “driving at an extremely high speed and changing lanes erratically” after blowing a red light at Northwest 183rd Street and nearly striking two vehicles.

Lumpkin, driving a 2016 Nissan Maxima, collided with Symonette’s 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class head-on, killing her and wounding her passenger.

Lumpkin’s vehicle went out of control, collided with a chain-link fence, and caught fire. He and his passenger exited the car.

According to police, Lumpkin was traveling 91 mph one second before contact and collided with Symonette at 89 mph, having only applied the brakes about a half second earlier. Authorities say the speed limit on that stretch of road is 35 mph.

About five years before the 2020 crash, officers with the Miami-Dade Police Department arrested a then-14-year-old Lumpkin on a manslaughter charge after alleging that he shot and killed Jakyri Fleurimar, 15, of Hollywood, on August 12, 2015, at a home in the 5300 block of Northwest 27th Place.

It remained unclear on Tuesday what happened in the juvenile case.

On Monday, a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Robbery Intervention Detail detective observed Lumpkin driving a 2019 Nissan Maxima with an unlawful tag cover and stopped him at Northwest 27th Avenue and 165th Street in Miami Gardens.

Authorities stated he drove away as the investigator got out of his or her car. Deputies followed him without using their lights or sirens until he wrecked near Northwest 167th Street and 22nd Avenue.

They said they apprehended Lumpkin, of northwest Miami-Dade, following a brief foot pursuit.

Lumpkin, who is also charged with escaping, eluding, and resisting an officer without violence, was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a bond of more than $250,000.
