Matamoros man sentenced for illegal reentry into the U.S.

A 54-year-old Matamoros, Mexico, man has been sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States, according to US Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.

Luis Ernesto Hernandez-Doria pled guilty on April 9 and is set to face deportation proceedings following his incarceration.

U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera imposed the term, noting Hernandez-Doria’s lengthy criminal record, which includes four prior felony and six misdemeanor convictions. The judge highlighted the importance of a hefty sentence to dissuade him from future unauthorized readmission. Hernandez-Doria has three prior felony convictions for unauthorized reentry and stealing a weapon from an officer. He was first taken in November 2016 and has since illegally returned three times, with officials discovering him in Brownsville on October 12, 2024.

Hernandez-Doria will be held in detention until transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. The Border Patrol handled the investigation, while Assistant US Attorney Luis Salazar prosecuted the case. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, the Department of Justice’s broad program to target illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations.
