Two individuals from Brooklyn, New York, were arrested and charged in Cumberland County this month for attempting to have a man with dementia cash a fraudulent check, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
On July 8, John Williams’ daughter called the Pennsylvania State Police and reported that her father was being duped by two individuals. Williams, who is in his eighties, was diagnosed with dementia in May 2025 and occasionally has confusion, according to the affidavit.
Police discovered that the two suspects, subsequently identified as 50-year-old Nigel A. Sargeant and 32-year-old Dwayne W. Lawrence, were bringing Williams to a PNC bank to cash a phony check.
