New York Summer Weather Alert: Showers and Thunderstorms Expected in Central Park, FDR Drive by Monday

A muggy Sunday foreshadows a drastic change in Manhattan’s weather, with storms threatening to delay the start of the week. Residents and travelers should brace themselves for shifting sky and possible downpours, particularly around Central Park and along important highways such as FDR Drive. It’s time to double-check your weather apps, keep umbrellas on hand, and plan for potential travel delays as a new round of summer storms approaches.

According to the National Weather Service, Sunday will be partly sunny with a high of 82°F, but rain is expected to develop significantly by Monday. Showers and thunderstorms are predicted in New York City from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, with the highest rainfall and thunderstorm risk after 2 p.m. There is a 60% probability of precipitation, which could cause slippery conditions and localized floods in low-lying areas. Southeast breezes may add to the unsettling atmosphere, particularly for those traveling near Central Park or on FDR Drive.

City officials urge avoiding needless travel during severe weather, charging mobile devices ahead of time, and monitoring public transportation updates. Patchy fog may develop late Monday night, significantly decreasing vehicle visibility. Heat returns on Tuesday, with highs reaching 86°F, so remain hydrated and avoid excessive exertion in the afternoon sun.

Looking ahead, Wednesday through Friday will bring additional heat (highs in the upper 80s) with a persistent possibility of showers and thunderstorms. It’s a typical New York summer pattern: sun, storms, and high temperatures, so keep an eye on daily updates as the week progresses. Weather alerts are still probable, particularly for afternoon and evening storms.

Five-Day NYC Weather Outlook (Central Park, July 13th–17th):

  • Sunday: Partly sunny, high near 82°F. Southeast wind 6–8 mph.
  • Monday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2 p.m. High near 80°F. Chance of rain 60%.
  • Tuesday: Patchy fog before 8 a.m., then mostly sunny, high near 86°F.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high near 87°F.
  • Thursday: 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, partly sunny, high near 87°F.
  • Friday: 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, partly sunny, high near 87°F.
