Rain chances will increase across Virginia and northeastern North Carolina beginning Sunday night, with some locations receiving up to a half-inch by Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, dry and cooler-than-normal temperatures will persist for the majority of Sunday, but a system moving in from the west will bring increased rainfall Sunday night and Monday, particularly in southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Richmond, Norfolk, Emporia, and Elizabeth City are expected to receive 0.25 to 0.5 inches of total rain by Tuesday night.

While the rain will help relieve dry conditions, it may affect early-week travel and outdoor plans. Farmville, Petersburg, and Williamsburg are also expected to have wet weather late Sunday into early Monday, followed by a brief period of clearing. Rain will return on Tuesday afternoon and evening as another system approaches from the west.

Beachgoers should exercise caution: while the rip current risk was low on Sunday, it increased to moderate on Monday at Virginia Beach and the northern Outer Banks. Officials advise swimmers to follow local warnings and avoid rough surf.

The strongest rains are forecast by late Tuesday. Stay informed, as new alerts may be issued until midweek.
