South Loop Burglars Arrested Following Hammering On Condo Door For 5 Minutes

Three men are facing burglary charges after being apprehended inside a South Loop residential building, allegedly banging and prying at a condo door for more than five minutes, causing a homeowner to contact 911.

Kontrell Jones, 35, Dominique Stokes, 33, and Marquis Williams, 37, allegedly forced their way into the mailroom of a townhome complex in the 1700 block of South Prairie Avenue by passing through an inside chain-link fence. A resident observed the men on a security camera as they allegedly pried on a condo door repeatedly. Another householder contacted 911 to report “suspicious persons.”

Responding cops discovered all three guys in a complex stairwell, with Williams hiding behind a brick pillar before fleeing down the stairs and out the door, according to a Chicago police report. Two cops later apprehended him in the 1800 block of South Calumet Avenue.

Jones and Stokes were apprehended on the scene. Both were wearing gloves, and officers discovered a screwdriver in Jones’ waistband, authorities said. Investigators later located a severely damaged interior door with the handle and metal plate pulled off, as well as another townhome door with scratch marks, pry marks, and a missing handle.

Jones, Stokes, and Williams are all charged with burglary and attempted residential burglary. Jones faces an extra charge of possessing burglary tools. Stokes was also charged with failing to register as a gun offender.

Judge Shauna Boliker released Jones and Stokes on electronic monitoring but jailed Williams, calling him “a threat to the community.” She based this on his criminal record, which includes a 2023 residential burglary conviction.
