A Virginia woman has been charged with felony homicide and child abuse in the death of her two-month-old son, after a months-long Roanoke Police Department investigation.
According to a press release, investigators apprehended Lindsey Renee Burnette, 37, on September 3, 2025. This arrest came after a grand jury indicted her on felony homicide, child abuse/neglect resulting in serious injury, and child cruelty.
The inquiry began on Friday, February 14, 2025, with officers responding to a report of an unresponsive infant in the 600 block of Hanover Avenue NW. When they arrived, they discovered two-month-old Aka-rri Burnette-Coleman had died.
Burnette told officers that she and the infant had been sleeping in the same bed and awoke to see him unconscious.
The case was ruled a homicide on May 14, 2025, after the Office of the Medical Examiner completed its report. The analysis determined that the infant died as a result of asphyxia and acute methamphetamine intoxication. The investigation determined that Burnette rolled across her son while they were asleep.
Burnette is now being imprisoned in the Roanoke City Jail.
