A man and a woman are in police detention after allegedly orchestrating an elaborate multi-state theft scheme involving construction equipment.

They were both charged with receiving stolen property after the recovery of more than $185,000 in stolen heavy equipment.

According to police, the incidents began on August 13, when a 2018 D5K Caterpillar worth $65,000 was sold to a Laurel County business using fake identification.

The bulldozer was stolen from a construction site in Fairfax County, Virginia, two days prior under the premise of needing maintenance.

On August 29, police launched an undercover investigation to entice both suspects into delivering a 259 skid steer valued at $47,000 and a 308 excavator valued at $73,000, both of which were discovered to be stolen in Maryland.

When the suspects were confused about the delivery location, police stopped them and arrested them.

The police have not yet disclosed the details of how they stole the equipment from Maryland.

Sheperd was also accused in Fairfax County and is currently awaiting extradition.
