The National Weather Service (NWS) in Milwaukee has issued a warning for potentially hazardous conditions along Lake Michigan’s coasts. Residents in Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Milwaukee, and Racine Counties should exercise extreme caution beginning late tonight and continuing through Saturday afternoon due to the forecast of life-threatening waves of 3 to 5 feet and dangerous currents. The National Weather Service Milwaukee advises the public to “stay out of the water and away from dangerous areas like piers and breakwaters.”
Today’s weather in Milwaukee is mostly sunny, with a high of 73 and an east wind blowing 5 to 10 mph. However, the National Weather Service has underlined the increased danger of scattered storms emerging later in the day and lasting into the night. A Beach Hazards Statement is in force owing to the combination of heavy waves and onshore winds, which can cause “strong structural and longshore currents,” as well as rip currents, making swimming highly unsafe.
Weather concerns span east-central, south-central, and southeast Wisconsin. Earlier this morning, some locations had patchy dense fog. The breeze along the shoreline will continue into the night. If you plan to be outside, be aware and prepared to seek shelter, as the risk of thunderstorms increases moving into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
In terms of safety precautions, beachgoers must observe the warnings and advice. The National Weather Service warns that the “high swim risk continues into Saturday afternoon.” Unstable weather patterns are expected to persist over the coming days, with thunderstorms remaining a common occurrence until early next week.
