Texas Braces For Sudden Deep Freeze As Temperatures Crash By 55 Degrees

It may be abnormally hot in Texas right now, but a strong cold front approaching the Lone Star State will send temperatures plummeting. Many cities will see temperatures drop by more than 30 degrees in a matter of hours and stay lower for a few days, providing some reprieve from what feels like an early summer.

Cooler weather is on the way from Dalhart to Dallas and San Antonio. Over the weekend and early next week, a cold front is expected to reduce temperatures from approaching triple-digits. “A strong trough will swing through the Northern Plains late this week and send a cold front southward on Friday,” the Dallas-Fort Worth National Weather Service office says. This should reduce high temperatures by several degrees from Friday until next weekend.

The Texas Panhandle will experience the most stunning transformation. After many afternoons in the mid- to high-90s, the region will experience a dramatic 55-degree temperature drop on Thursday, March 26. Amarillo’s temperature will drop from 99 degrees that afternoon to a considerably cooler 44 overnight. Dalhart will experience a 96-degree afternoon, followed by an almost cold 35-degree night.

It will be a bright but colder weekend in northern Texas. The weekend highs should be in the 60s and 70s, with evening temperatures dropping into the upper 20s to mid-30s. Dalhart should experience frigid temperatures again Friday night.

This cold front should reach North Texas, specifically DFW, by Thursday night. The metro area’s temperature will drop roughly 30 degrees between Thursday night and midday, from 91 to 64 degrees. Temperatures in North Texas might barely top 70 degrees at their highest by Saturday, with a mild weekend ahead.

This rush of frigid air will take longer to reach South and Central Texas, however. By Friday night, San Antonio should experience a significant cooldown, replacing a week of 90-degree days with overnight lows in the 50s. The weekend highs should be in the mid- to upper 50s. The evenings will remain cool in the mid-50s until the start of the next work week. By Friday, a cold front is expected to sweep across the area. The National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio office anticipates that temperatures will be colder following the front. “Much cooler for Saturday in the wake of the front, with 60s and 70s areawide.”
