Man Detained After Firing At Deputies

A man is under arrest after firing dozens of shots at Neshoba County Sheriff’s deputies Monday afternoon near Stallo.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrested Augustine Eugene Clark, 42, of 10140 Road 848 in Noxapater, and charged him with five counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, according to Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark.

Clark stated that the charges are part of an ongoing investigation into the firearms incident and that other charges may be filed.

Deputies confronted Clark on Monday, Sept. 29, at around 2:45 p.m., when a call came in reporting a man armed with an AR-15 platform rifle threatening his child’s mother and law enforcement at his Road 848 residence in Neshoba County’s far north, near the Winston County Line.

“He said if the police came, they are going to wish they hadn’t,” Clark told me.

At 3:25 p.m., deputies came and confirmed that the mother and her child were not on the premises. Clark stated that the suspect threatened the lives of the deputies on the site before retreating into the residence.

At 3:27 p.m., he started firing on the deputies from inside the house, where they couldn’t see him. Clark stated he emptied his magazine and fired 29 rounds at the deputies through the house’s door. Clark stated that multiple shots struck the deputies’ patrol vehicles. Deputies returned three rounds into the residence but missed the suspect. During this moment, deputies requested additional assistance.

Clark reported that after unloading his revolver, the suspect departed the premises with his hands raised. Though he looked to surrender, Clark said deputies had to use multiple tasers, which did not appear to impact the subject, and they were only able to handcuff him after a physical fight.

Clark said it took about three minutes after the suspect began firing before he was apprehended and detained.

Clark stated that he was en route to the area when he heard reports of gunfire.

“It felt like an eternity,” Clark explained.

During their investigation of the home, investigators discovered several loaded magazines. They also discovered a huge television inside the house, which was linked to a total of six cameras that overlooked the driveway. Clark stated that the man utilized the cameras to shoot his revolver at deputies through the closed door of the residence.

“I’m glad these deputies got to go home and see their families,” Clark added.

Clark stated that the MBI is managing the investigation into the shooting.
