West Virginia Braces for Winter Blast: Up to 8 Inches of Snow, Temps Drop Into 20s Tonight

The first winter storm of the season has begun in the Middle Ohio Valley and central Appalachians, bringing snow, freezing temperatures, and treacherous travel conditions to Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, snow showers will continue throughout the day and evening before diminishing overnight. Winter Storm Warnings are in force for regions surrounding Charleston, Beckley, and Elkins, where 4 to 8 inches of snow are expected, with higher amounts locally in the mountains. The surrounding areas are under winter weather advisories for 2 to 4 inches of accumulation.

Temperatures are forecast to plunge well into the 20s tonight, with wind chills in the teens and single digits in higher elevations. Winds might gust to 40 mph, resulting in blowing snow and decreased visibility.

The NWS warns that slippery patches are likely on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads, particularly during the evening and early Tuesday commute. Drivers are advised to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check current forecasts before leaving.

While most lowland locations will receive just light accumulations, even brief bursts of heavier snow may result in slippery conditions and quick visibility changes.
