A 71-year-old Preble County man has been taken into custody in connection with an animal cruelty investigation, the sheriff’s office announced on Monday.
According to the Preble County Sheriff’s Office, Robert Hammaker is charged with one felony offense of cruelty to companion animals and fifteen misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. The accusations stem from a search warrant conducted at his home last week.
Deputies discovered numerous animals, including calves, cows, lambs, and horses, living in unclean conditions with no food, water, or shelter. Authorities also located a dead dog on the premises, having been shot twice.
All surviving animals were removed from the property, examined by a veterinarian, and are currently cared for by volunteers.
Hammaker has posted bond and been released from jail. He’s due to appear in court this afternoon.
