The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, citing a snowy mix that is predicted to cause slick and hazardous travel conditions throughout the Mid-South.
Forecasters warn that a light crust of ice may form on roadways, bridges, and sidewalks, particularly along and north of Interstate 40, as freezing rain and sleet move in Monday evening. Areas west of the Mississippi River, such as Jonesboro, West Memphis, Blytheville, and eastern Arkansas, have the highest chance of ice accumulations of 0.01 to 0.05 inches.
Even minor amounts of ice can make bridges and overpasses dangerous, especially during the Tuesday morning commute, when temperatures will be around freezing. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, limit speed, and allow for additional travel time.
According to the NWS, driving consequences are the greatest worry, with icing more likely to cause isolated travel delays than widespread damage. However, untreated secondary roads might become slick overnight.
Temperatures are predicted to soar above freezing by late Tuesday morning, allowing any residual ice to melt. The Mid-South will continue frigid, with another cold front expected later this week.
Residents should continue to follow NWS Memphis for updates if circumstances change overnight.
