A Dallas man was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Thursday for his role in a string of ATM smash-and-grabs.
Joseph Turner pleaded guilty to Hobbs Act robbery, a federal offense that prohibits robbery or attempted robbery that disrupts interstate or foreign commerce.
According to investigators, Turner led and organized a group of people participating in the crime spree that occurred between May 16 and June 1, 2023. According to police, the perpetrators broke the window of a convenience shop with a sledgehammer before dragging an ATM out with a stolen truck or SUV. After the ATM was removed, it was loaded into the van, and they drove off.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI’s Frisco office, as well as the Plano, Irving, Dallas, Mesquite, Carrollton, and Grapevine Police Departments, are investigating this case.
