North Carolina Man Sentenced To Prison For Trafficking Cocaine In Package To Portsmouth

A North Carolina man has been sentenced to 10 years for his role in a cocaine trafficking operation that shipped a package containing cocaine from San Diego to Portsmouth, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

According to court records, 41-year-old Kareem Akeem McMurrin conspired with another person to ship a box carrying 10 kg of cocaine from San Diego to Portsmouth.

On February 5, law enforcement investigators intercepted a package carrying ten kilograms of cocaine, according to the United States Attorney’s Office. The cocaine was removed from the package and collected by McMurrin upon delivery.

When investigators attempted to apprehend McMurrin, he fled at high speed with his adolescent child in the car and attempted to discard the package. McMurrin was located in March and arrested on an outstanding warrant.

“McMurrin’s conduct was inherently dangerous and damaging on a transnational scale,” said Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “He attempted to contribute to the success of a dangerous and larger enterprise. This administration has prioritized the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations and to protect our communities from their crimes. My office will persist in prosecuting drug traffickers to achieve these goals.”

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the United States Postal Inspection Services investigated the case.
