The National Weather Service in Jackson predicts a significant decrease in temperature this weekend as a wave of Arctic air moves into Mississippi.
After a pleasant Saturday with highs in the 50s and 60s, temperatures are predicted to drop 35 to 45 degrees by Monday morning, reaching the teens and 20s throughout the state.
Forecasters refer to this as “weekend weather whiplash,” warning households to prepare for the deadly cold by covering exposed pipes, outside faucets, and vulnerable plants. The NWS also emphasizes the importance of providing safe, warm shelter for pets, friends, and family during freezing temperatures.
The cold front will move through late Sunday, bringing strong northwest winds and dramatically decreasing temperatures Sunday night and early Monday.
Officials advise taking precautions before the weekend ends, as the rapid freeze might result in pipe bursts, frost damage, and dangerous situations for unprepared individuals.
