A winter storm is anticipated to bring snow, ice, and treacherous driving conditions to northern Virginia and Maryland this weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories for Allegan, Washington, Frederick, Carroll, Baltimore, Howard, and Montgomery counties in Maryland, as well as Frederick, Warren, Clarke, and Loudoun counties in Virginia.
The advisories begin as early as 10 a.m. Friday and last through the night.
Overall, the NWS predicts little snow or sleet—up to an inch in most regions. However, the ice appears to be the more serious issue. Forecasters predict that between Friday and Saturday, northern Maryland could see one-tenth to four-tenths of an inch of ice formation, making streets and sidewalks extremely slippery.
Dangerous roads
AAA expects that Friday will be a busy travel day, but the NWS recommends that you avoid traveling until the storm passes.
“Travel is strongly discouraged,” the NWS said. “If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Prepare for possible power outages. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511.”
