Southern California should brace for rain and gusty conditions throughout the week.

Residents should also plan for a wet New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with rainfall rates between a quarter and a half inch per hour expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

“The chances of a wet New Year’s Parade, including the night before when people camp out ahead of the parade, are extremely high—80–90% at this point,” the weather service said in a Monday evening statement. “The last wet New Year’s parade was in 2006.”

Timeline

Tuesday: Windy conditions with a chance of rain at night.

Wednesday: Rain chances increase during the day and continue into the night.

Thursday: The storm peaks from Wednesday night through Thursday night.

Friday: A 10–12% chance of rain.

Saturday: Additional rain remains possible.

Basics

  • This storm will be weaker than last week’s system, which set records.
  • Rainfall totals are expected to reach 1–3 inches in the basin and 3–5 inches in the foothills and mountains.
  • Wind gusts may reach 30–50 mph.

Useful heads up

When the ground’s already saturated, even moderate rain can change the risk quickly
