South Carolina Weather Alert: Winter Storm Risk Increasing This Weekend

Confidence grows that a potentially severe winter storm will hit South Carolina this weekend, increasing the possibility of hazardous travel and wintry conditions across much of the state as early as Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, forecasters are increasingly optimistic that a winter system will enter the region this weekend; however, important elements such as precipitation type, timing, and volumes remain unknown. Impacts might start Saturday morning and linger until Sunday, depending on how the system evolves.

The Midlands and northern regions of South Carolina have the highest risk of experiencing winter weather impacts. Columbia, Newberry, Lancaster, and Orangeburg are in a zone with a moderate to high likelihood of at least minor winter impacts. Snow, sleet, freezing rain, or a combination of the three are all possible, and even modest ice accumulation can create hazardous driving conditions.

Impacts may be less severe further south and toward eastern Georgia, but forecasters warn that very cold air behind the system could prolong travel hazards beyond the time of active precipitation. Bridges and overpasses would be particularly vulnerable if freezing rain occurred.

Residents are encouraged to regularly watch updates, reassess travel arrangements, and prepare for chilly weather. Officials emphasize that, while the storm is still several days away, confidence in its possible repercussions is higher than typical in the region, and more advisories or watches may be issued as the weekend approaches.
