Home Invader Gets Black Eye From Residents, Receives 20-Year Sentence From Judge

A Chicago man accused of breaking into a Naperville home where his ex-girlfriend was visiting, only to be confronted and detained by three men who held him until police arrived, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced on Tuesday.

On August 6, 2022, about 4 a.m., Adam Stone, 28, went to a Naperville home where his ex-girlfriend was visiting and broke a basement window to gain in, according to Berln. Once inside, he attacked the inhabitants until being pushed out.

According to Berlin, Stone hurled a landscaping brick through the front window and several bricks at automobiles parked in the driveway about 15 minutes after leaving the house. Naperville police arrived to the location and discovered “several men” holding Stone down outside the home.

Stone’s mugshot on the night of his arrest shows that his left eye is darkened.

Stone was found guilty in a two-day bench trial that ended on April 22, 2025, with Judge Margaret O’Connell presiding. She judged him guilty on two counts of home invasion, a Class X felony.

Stone was on probation out of Cook County after pleading guilty to severe domestic assault charges when the home invasion occurred. He has been in DuPage County custody since his arrest in the home invasion case.

“We all have the right to feel safe and secure in our homes,” Berlin declared in a statement. “Our homes are our sanctuaries that provide us with safety and security and when Mr. Stone broke into the victim’s home, he not only shattered the feeling of security the homeowners previously enjoyed, he also set an entire community on edge.”

Berlin stated that the 20-year sentence “sends the crystal-clear message that in DuPage County, we will not stand for this type of violent behavior and anyone engaged in such behavior will find themselves facing serious consequences.”
