A 19-year-old man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping a woman aboard a CTA Blue Line train on the Northwest Side and battering a correctional officer while in custody, according to court records.
Tyshawn Robinson was sentenced Thursday by Judge Charles Burns after pleading guilty to aggravated criminal sexual assault while committing another offense. He was 17 years old when the attack occurred on April 29, 2024, but was charged as an adult.
CTA surveillance video showed Robinson and the 38-year-old victim on the same train when Robinson attempted to touch her near the Addison station about midnight, according to officials.
The woman fled, but Robinson was after her, eventually seizing her and bringing her onto his lap, according to a detention petition. When she fought to break free, Robinson choked her with his elbow and forearm, prosecutors claimed.
Prosecutors claim Robinson forced the lady over a seat in the car and sexually assaulted her at least twice while she fought back. Officials described the attack as a “prolonged” assault that took place in front of witnesses. He ran when the train’s operator entered the car. Police in Chicago discovered him nearby shortly after.
Burns sentenced Robinson to 15 years in prison for the sexual assault and required him to register as a sex offender and comply with other requirements. According to court records, the judge also sentenced Robinson to a consecutive three-year sentence for aggravated violence of a peace officer, a charge he received while in detention.
